If you have visited Fredericksburg, or have the privilege of calling it home, you know the magic of this sweet and charming town. A weekend escape from big city traffic, noise, access to views, great restaurants, and boutique shopping are all a breath of fresh air to locals and visitors, alike, but especially to couples.
It is not hard to see why the town’s wedding popularity has exploded in the past decade. Even through COVID related shutdowns, most of the local wedding vendors stayed afloat as the remote nature of Fredericksburg served as a safe haven for scaled-back events.
Weddings continue to thrive in Fredericksburg as couples desire to create their wedding memories here. However, area weddings do have unique challenges, as well. As you plan your wedding in this little Texas town, there are some special points to consider.
Don’t DIY it
If you were on the fence about hiring a wedding planner or coordinator, don’t skip it. Most of the venues in Fredericksburg now require at least a day-of coordinator and it really is for your benefit. An experienced, local, professional planner will help guide you in vendor selections, best practices, and execution on the wedding day. A planner will also know the current tips and tricks for navigating challenges unique to this area.
While DIY might be tempting, don’t neglect the benefits of a good planner.
Beware Food Costs
Recently, there has been a significant increase in food, beverage and service costs. From supply chain issues (have you seen the price of eggs?), to labor shortages, catering companies have seen more price increases than any other wedding-based industry.
Expect to pay 20 percent more for catering, overall, than two years ago. If this isn’t a priority for you, consider other options such as restaurant catering.
Hair and Makeup
Plan to pay travel fees for hair and makeup stylists out of nearby cities such as Austin and San Antonio. Despite hopeful improvements soon, there is a current shortage of these services in Fredericksburg.
Keep it Classic
Black tie, white florals, silk and satin fabrics are all back in fashion. Trends are leaning away from recent BOHO styles and moving back to classic and simple. This never goes out of fashion, but just takes a break in popularity. It’s back for now.
It will be interesting to see how couples pair this style trend against the rustic Hill Country backdrops.
The Experience
Not surprisingly, after social-distancing with the COVID-19 pandemic, couples are excited to bring their guests together for the mini vacation of a wedding celebration.
Shared experiences are being valued over larger guest counts, posh hotels and extravagance. Unlike other Hill Country towns, Fredericksburg has plenty of boutique lodging and is far enough away from the big city to give a destination feel without international hassle.
The laid-back, small-town vibe of Fredericksburg has enough activity to be stimulating while preserving a quintessential Texas Hill Country experience for a weekend. Fredericksburg is truly a Texas home away from home.
